artist statment:
My paintings are rooted in abstraction and focused on materiality and different sets of color relationships. I started this year with fully saturated colors but then moved to all-black and subtle temperature-shift paintings, and I am now focusing on mid-value ranges. My shift in colors was to focus on my use of paint and textural qualities. My work speed is quick and energetic due to the short brushstrokes. I often paint in oil, but I’m interested in layering through oil sticks, oil pastels, and paint mediums such as cold wax. My references lost images within my camera roll, which are then technologically altering images to disconnect from personal. From this surface, quality and color relationships are more important than the imagery in my work.
My current works utilize dark blacks in different temperature shifts. This narrow range of blacks emphasizes the importance of the marks and shapes created on the surface of my paintings. I often think about Robert Ryman and his minimalist paintings but his maximalist approach to paint quality. I also reflect upon Marsden Hartley’s landscape works and his use of blocked-in shapes in a masculine manner that utilizes vigorous brushstrokes, hard pressure, and opacity. My energetic and minimal paintings are intended to leave the viewer in a state of thought and pull the viewer deeper into the paintings with the textures and brush strokes on the surface.
